POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State football team wrapped up spring football on Saturday with the annual spring scrimmage. The scrimmage saw a lot of positives on both sides of the ball as the defense forced the offense into five turnovers and the offense scored two touchdowns on the afternoon.
"It was fun watching everyone run around," Idaho State coach
Rob Phenicie said. "We finally got to go live with each other. We saw our running backs run around a little bit and our defense hit and we had a traditional ones on ones and twos on twos spring scrimmage."
This was the second scrimmage of the spring and Phenicie felt his team treated it more game-like today on a sunny day in front of several hundred fans.
"The kids ramped it up a little more today," Phenicie said. "It was fun. That is why we put the team on one side so the berm could be open for everyone. We appreciate everyone coming out."
Aren Manu,
Adkin Aguirre,
Hunter Eborn and
Kory Garcia had interceptions while
Christian Holland recovered a fumble for the defense.
DJ Hagler had six tackles while
Paea Moala had five tackles.
Koby Lowe and
TJ Togiai each had a sack to lead the defense.
Gunnar Amos threw for 68 yards, completing seven passes on 14 attempts. Had was picked off twice.
Tanner Gueller was 7-11 for 55 yards and one touchdown and one interception while
Mike Goggin was 2-5 for 15 yards and one touchdown.
Kieran Yancy ran for 104 yards on 15 carries. He had a 31-yard touchdown run on the second series of the scrimmage.
James Madison and
Ty Flanagan each ran for 54 yards.
Jake Johnson led the receiving core with 51 yards on five receptions. On the second to last drive of the scrimmage
Austin Campbell caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Gueller.
"I like the effort and enthusiasm," Phenicie said. "I the like the fact that they were chirping at one another and then they shook hands. There is a level of competiveness that this team has that you have to have. I like that we didn't have a lot of procedural mistakes out of the offensive and defensive staffs."
There will not be a lot of changes for the football team between now and fall camp.
"It is all refinement," Phenicie said. "What we did is who we are and what we got."
