POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State women's cross country team narrowly beat Southern Utah 27-28 today at their season opener. Three Bengals finished in the top-five to secure the win.
Freshman
Carly Hansen, who hails from Arco, Idaho, finished first for the Bengals and second overall with a 3K time of 10:54.00.
"It's my first college race. I feel really good about it," said Hansen. "It gave me a boost of confidence. I know I can hold my own now."
Freshman Jasmine Nesbitt followed Hansen in third with a time of 11:00.00. Sophomore Katie Nicholls finished fifth with 11:05.00, Abigail Ashbee-Simmonds finished seventh with 11:09.00 and Sasha Kent finished 10th with 11:16.00.
"We knew we were going to be really young, especially on the women's side," said Head Cross Country Coach Brian Janssen. "I thought the women ran really well today. I was pleased, they packed up and did a pretty good job. The men did a good job, too. We're better than we were at this point last year, and they are also a pretty young team. I'm very excited about today's results."
Junior KC Hunsicker led the men's side with a third-place finish and 6K time of 19:21.00. The men fell to Southern Utah 24-31.
Senior Ray Miller followed Hunsicker with a fourth-place finish and time of 19:38.00. Dylan Rafaey finished eighth with 20:09.00, Ty James was ninth with 20:16.00 and Andrew Kaler was 10th with 20:21.
The Bengals are home again next week for the Idaho State Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 9 a.m. at Centennial Course.
