Idaho State Radio Bios Jerry Miller(Play-by-Play: Football, Men's Basketball, Soccer)
Jerry Miller begins his 28th year as a play-by-play announcer for Idaho State and 20th as the Voice of the Bengals covering football and men’s basketball. Miller has covered Bengal athletics more years than any other announcer in the history of Idaho State.
Miller began his career as the Voice of the Bengals in August of 1982. In his first 12 years he worked with football coaches Dave Kragthorpe, Jim Koetter, Garth Hall and Brian McNeeley. Miller was the radio voice for the now-famous “globe of death” football game against Boise State. He also called basketball games coached by Wayne Ballard, Jim Boutin and Herb Williams. His first run ended when the radio station he worked for decided not to carry games anymore.
Miller returned to broadcasting at Idaho State in 2000 when he provided play-by-play action on KISU FM for the Bengal women’s basketball program. He covered the women’s basketball program for eight years working with notable coaches Ardie McInelly and Jon Newlee. During his time with the women’s basketball program Miller called action in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in games against Vanderbilt and Stanford, as well as Women’s NIT games at Iowa State, Kansas State and Boise State.
He continued to cover the women’s basketball program until August of 2008 when he was asked to return as the Voice of the Bengals, broadcasting Idaho State football and men’s basketball contests where he has worked with football coaches John Zamberlin and Mike Kramer and men’s basketball coaches Joe O’Brien, Deane Martin and Bill Evans. He has also broadcast numerous Idaho State women’s softball and soccer games and was the voice of Bengal women’s soccer during the 2010 season.
Since 1999, Miller has served as the general manager of KISU-FM, a public radio station that also broadcasts Idaho State soccer, volleyball and women’s basketball games. Miller serves as a mentor to college students hoping to get into sports broadcasting. During his six year absence from Idaho State athletic broadcasts Miller announced high school football and basketball games for Century, American Falls and Snake River.
Prior to joining Idaho State in fall of 1982, Jerry called games for KSL radio in Salt Lake City. The position began as in internship and eventually ended with Miller taking a four year, full-time position where he served as“Hot Rod” Hundley’s back-up play-by-play announcer for the Utah Jazz, and acting as a courtside host for Utah Jazz broadcasts. He was also the back-up announcer for BYU men’s basketball games. He also served as the studio host of BYU football and basketball broadcasts for four years.
Miller has been married to his wife Rozan for over 39 years. They are the parents of seven children and have 17 grandchildren.
Mark Liptak
(Play-by Play: Women's Basketball)Mark Liptak returns for his third season as the play-by-play announcer for the Idaho State women’s basketball team; calling for Head Coach Seton Sobolewski since he began his career at ISU. Liptak has spent over 30 years in the sports media business. He has worked for many different radio stations in various capacities including disc jockey, board operator and play-by-play announcer in Kentucky, Louisiana and Idaho.
Liptak has served as a play-by-play announcer for basketball, football and volleyball. He was the play-by-play announcer for the University of Kentucky’s football program via the campus station WBKY as well as calling the action for the university’s basketball program.
In addition to calling for the Idaho State women’s basketball team, Liptak has covered high school basketball for West Monroe in Louisiana, Highland and Century girls basketball in Idaho as well as Century boys basketball in Pocatello. He has also performed play-by-play for high school football’s Clark County in Kentucky and Century in Pocatello. For volleyball, Liptak has called for Idaho State and Highland High School’s programs.
He has spent 15 years in sports television working for WTVQ in Lexington, Kentucky, KNOE of Monroe, Louisiana and KPVI of Pocatello, Idaho. Liptak has also worked for many different newspapers both as a full-time employee and as a free lance reporter for the Idaho State Journal, the Blackfoot Morning News, the Twin Falls Times-News, the Sacramento Bee and the Arizona Republic.
Liptak previously served as Idaho State’s play-by-play announcer from 1995-00, having worked with Ted Anderson, Steve Hayes, and Ardie McInelly.
Currently, he also serves as the studio host for the ISU football radio network where Liptak gives score updates though-out the game, as well as pregame/halftime/feature interviews. He spends his time serving as a reporter covering ISU athletics for the Twin Falls Times-News while continuing to serve as the senior writer and historical contributor for White Sox Interactive.com.
Liptak was born and raised in Chicago. He is married to Zoe. He has a son, Mason, and grandson, Kason. He attended Brother Rice high school in Chicago and the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he majored in telecommunications.
Matt Steuart
(Play-by-Play: Volleyball, Color: Soccer) Matt Steuart has been calling Idaho State volleyball play-by-play action for six seasons and has been helping with soccer for the past three seasons. In 2010, Steuart gave play-by-play for the ISU volleyball team when they traveled to Portland State to compete in the Big Sky Conference Tournament Semifinals.
He often shares play-by-play and color commentary duties for Idaho State soccer with Idaho State's Voice of the Bengals Jerry Miller. Steuart has also filled in as a color commentator for several women's basketball games at Idaho State.
Steuart enters his eighth year with Idaho State University, and his second as the athletic department's Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. Steuart spent 5 years as the Director for Academics, after serving as Graduate Assistant for Compliance and Student Support for one year.
Steuart aids the Student Support team in a variety of ways including compliance issues, personal and academic counseling with student-athletes, overseeing the athletic study table, meeting with recruits, distribution of the NCAA Special Assistance fund, and coordinating, planning and teaching the Life Skills for Student-Athletes course taught at ISU.
In addition, Steuart serves as an advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is the sports supervisor for the ISU Tennis program. Matt also serves as one of the voices of the Bengals. He is a broadcaster for the ISU Women's Soccer team and the ISU Women's Volleyball team. Steuart graduated from Idaho State with his bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in History in 1997, and he earned a master's degree in 1999 in the field of Mental Health Counseling. He also earned a second master's degree in Athletic Administration from Idaho State in 2004.
Brad Bugger
(Color Commentary: Men's and Women's Basketball)Brad Bugger has been involved in broadcasting Idaho State football and basketball games since 1994. Bugger currently serves as the men's and women's basketball color commentator at home games.
He has been a color analyst for Idaho State with four different play-by-play announcers in the last 17 years filling in as a play-by-play analyst when needed. He also co-hosts the weekly coaches show held at Chili's every Monday night. Bugger also served as the host of the "Bengal Review on KPVI for a month at the end of the 2009-10 season.
His other radio broadcast experience extends to providing color commentary and analysis as well as play-by-play information for Pocatello and Highland High School's football and basketball teams for 10 years (1984-1994).
Bugger came to Pocatello in 1979 as a sportswriter for the Idaho State Journal. He worked as a news reporter, magazine editor and city editor at the Idaho State Journal before leaving in 1990 to join the public affairs staff at the Idaho National Laboratory. During that time (late 1980's to early 1990's, Bugger served as the national media columnist for the Basketball times.
Currently, Bugger is employed at the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho Operations Office as a Public Affairs Supervisor where he oversees all public affairs activities at the Idaho National Laboratory.
Bugger was raised in Collinsville, Illinois as a rabid St. Louis Cardinals fans. He graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and acquired his Master's degree in Athletic Administration from Idaho State.
He is married to Janice Jean, an occupational therapist and Idaho State alumnus. Between the two of them Bugger and Jean have five grown children and 10 grandchildren.
Tim Lewis(Color Commentary: Football; Men's basketball: play-by-play.)
Tim Lewis begins his third year as a broadcast partner to Jerry Miller for ISU Football. He also handles play-by-play coverage of men’s basketball when there are conflicts for football in late fall.
Lewis has been involved in collegiate sports broadcasting for 30-years. Including two-seasons working with Miller from 1986-1988 as the sideline reporter for football games. Since then he has done play-by-play for a variety of sports for a number of schools, including: BYU, Weber State, Ohio University, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Utah Valley and called the Men’s basketball tournament for the Mountain West Conference
He was a studio voice for such Pro teams as the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos as well as the Utah Jazz.
Lewis is an eight-time Sportscaster of the Year. Recognized in Utah (5-times), California and Colorado. He has also been recognized for his work in Radio News at such radio stations as KSL-Salt Lake City, KOA-Denver, WLW-Cincinnati, KLO-Ogden and is currently the Program Director for Newstalk 97.7 KBLI/KBLY in Idaho Falls. He is a two-time Murrow Award recipient for his work at KOA
Between 1992 – 1995 Lewis hosted a nationally syndicated sports-talk show on the One on One Sports Radio Network based out of Chicago. His three-hour morning show was heard on over 250 stations across the country including XTRA-San Diego, KNBR-San Francisco, KTCT-Dallas, KFXX-Portland, WGMP-Philadelphia, and CKLW-Toronto.
Lewis was born in Ogden, Utah and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Weber State where he majored in Communications and was a walk-on linebacker under Coach Mike Price. He attended Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah. He has five sons and three grandchildren
