Holt Arena

Holt Arena

Idaho State has long been an innovator in athletic facilities. In 1967, then athletic director, Milton 'Dubby' Holt, had the idea of playing both football and basketball in a domed structure. The doors of Holt Arena opened in September 1970 with a 64-34 win over UNLV.

Only one domed facility predates Holt Arena: the Houston Astrodome. However, since ISU demonstrated that domed facilities could be constructed at a reasonable price, it was $2.8 million at the time, domes have become increasingly more popular across the country.

Holt Arena is presently one of the few totally-contained indoor stadiums anywhere. It consists of a 12,000-seat football stadium and an 8,000-seat basketball arena. Holt Arena is also one of the nation’s finest track facilities hosting several professional meets and has been the site of numerous world records. In December of 2010, ISU received a new basketball floor courtesy of Idaho Central Credit Union. ICCU court was unveiled on December 31 2010 when the Bengals fought past Sacramento Sate to in 68-63 in overtime.  In August of 2011, Idaho State upgraded their field turf as Hellas Construction installed a new turf which is used by the Dallas Cowboys.

Holt Arena has hosted many memorable events throughout the years. Included in these events are three NCAA Sub-Regional Basketball Tournaments, three NCAA Division I-AA playoff games, two I-AA National Championship games, and numerous district and conference indoor track championships.

In 2001, Holt Arena hosted the Big Sky Conference Women's Basketball Tournament as well as the Golden Spike Invitational Track Meet, which was broadcast on ESPN. The arena is also the host of the Simplot Games, one of the nation's premiere high school track meets, every February since 1979.

The arena is also the site of numerous concerts, state high school championships, and the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo.

In2009, courtesy of the Idaho Potato Commission, a new 16x12 foot video board debuted, further improving the fan experience at Holt Arena.
