Five Bengals Earn NCAA West Preliminary Round Spots

POCATELLO, Idaho – Five Bengals fight for a NCAA Championship berth at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas held Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27. Competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium begins with the men's javelin throw at 10 a.m. Thursday morning.
 
Athletes
Idaho State sends five athletes to Austin, Texas this weekend. The last time ISU surpassed that number was 2013 when six Bengals competed.
 
A total of 90 Big Sky athletes qualified for the meet and all 12 BSC teams will be represented.
 
Deante Gaines
Gaines is the only Idaho State athlete competing in two events. The senior is No. 31 in the triple jump and No. 36 in the long jump.
 
At the Big Sky Conference Championships, Gaines finished second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. He won two titles during the regular season, one in each event.
 
Gaines is one of 11 Big Sky athletes competing in multiple events. He ranks second all-time in both the long jump and triple jump for Idaho State.
 
Justin Franz
Franz enters the west regional with the highest rank of any Bengal. His 18.20m (59-8 1/2) throw in the shot put ranks 27th.
 
Franz won four shot put titles during the regular season. His first came at the UNLV Invitational where he earned his qualifying mark and jumped to third on the ISU record book.
 
Daniel Garz
Garz paved his way to the west regional with a 1:49.71 finish at the Stanford Invitational. He ranks 32nd in the men's 800m.
 
Garz had a pair of podium finishes in the regular season before finishing fifth in the Big Sky Conference Championship race.
 
The junior's time at Stanford University was the seventh-fastest 800m finish in ISU history.
 
Sasha Kent
Kent extended her collegiate career by qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Round at the Big Sky Conference Championships. The senior finished the conference championship 3,000m steeplechase in second with a time of 10:23.76, placing her at No. 38 ahead of the preliminary round.
 
Her conference championship performance placed her third on the Idaho State 3,000m steeplechase record list.
 
Jenica Dodge
Dodge advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary Round with her 34:42.63 finish at the Mt. SAC Relays. She enters the meet at No. 41 in the women's 10,000m event.
 
At the conference championships, Dodge earned all-conference status with a 35:45.79 finish in third. She holds the second-fastest in Idaho State history.

Athletes qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round by holding a top-48 mark in their respective event.
 
A top-12 finish at the NCAA West Preliminary Round earns an athlete a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
