POCATELLO, Idaho- Despite outshooting Portland State 18-15, the Idaho State soccer team lost 1-0 to Portland State on Friday afternoon at Davis Field. The loss drops the Bengals to 5-7 and 2-3 in Big Sky Conference play while the Vikings improved to 5-5-3 and 2-2-1.
"Portland State plays an effective style of the game and we got out of our rhythm trying to defend it in the first half," Idaho State coach
Allison Gibson said. "We did a great job of making adjustments at halftime and came out and played a much better second half. The bottom line is this conference us ugly. No one plays pretty soccer in this conference. We just have to claw and grab and try to get anything that we can to get a point or three points. Today we didn't do it."
Portland State scored its goal in the 15th minute on a shot from Kayla Henningsen. The Bengals had nine shots in each half and nine shots on goal for the game. Portland State finished with seven shots on goal.
Sheridan Hapsic had six saves in 90 minutes of action. Â
"We need to put the ball in the back of the net, bottom line," Gibson said. "We have hit the post. We have got close opportunities. Last week we had 49 shots and two goals and today 18 shots and no goals. It is that final piece. It is what we have worked on all week. We want it but that final piece is alluding us right now."
Idaho State is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. (MDT) for a contest at Sacramento State.
