ISU Men's Tennis Traveled to Big Sky Tournament

ISU was defeated by Weber State in the quarterfinals match.

SACRAMENTO,CA- ISU men's tennis traveled to participate in the Big Sky Conference tournament. ISU entered the tournament in the No. 4 seed. The Bengals faced No. 5 seed Weber State in the quarterfinals match of the conference. The Bengals fell to Weber State 4-3. This was the first Big Sky Conference appearance for ISU since 2006.

"We played a team we were 1-1 against," said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz. "We brought our full line up, they brought theirs and today they were the better team."

The Bengals clinched the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 position. Playing their final match as Bengals, senior team of Charles Norman and Nate Gross defeated Oliver Good and Caio Poitena in the No. 1 spot, 8-6. In the No. 2 position, Austin Miller and Jamey Swiggart overcame Sanja Goswami and Todd Fought, 8-6.

In singles action, Charles Norman defeated Todd Fought in the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 7-5. Nate Gross overpowered Cajo Poitena in the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-3.Christian Marian played a tough match in the No.1 spot but ultimately was overcome by WSU's Jakub Gewert, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.  

"It was a great year for us," Goeltz said. "Expectation got beyond reality and then eventually reality set in. We are a young team and this was a good experience for the young players. I'm very happy with this year and optimist for the future. We will be back in the tournament next year."

This year has been very successful for the Bengals. ISU closed the season with a 13-6 overall record and an 8-3 record against conference opponents. The Bengals were 8-0 at home this season, recording their first undefeated home season in over 10 years.   Jamey Swiggart led the team in single play closing the season with a 15-4 record in the No. 5 spot. Austin Miller closed the season with a 12-5 singles record in the No. 5 and No. 6 position. Charles Norman finished 12-5 on the season in the No. 2 position.
