POCATELLO, Idaho- Former Idaho State volleyball Big Sky Conference MVP, Susie Johnson, presented the 2012 Big Sky Conference MVP trophy to junior setter Lori Mendenhall at halftime during Saturdays' men's basketball game. This is only the second time an Idaho State player has received this honor. Susie Johnson earned the first MVP honor for her 1990 season with the Bengals. Mendenhall recorded 1201 assists, 277 digs on the season. The Salt Lake City, Utah native has played in 106 sets this season and in her career has 2,715 assists.

“It is super humbling,” says Mendenhall. “In 1990 it was a big team effort. Their team was amazing. It is the same this year, we had a good team and that is why we ended up getting where we did.”

Mendenhall attributed her success to her team and dedication.

“This wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for my team,” Mendenhall said. “They make me look good. I don't look good without them. I always want to get better. I'm always trying to improve on the things that I'm not very good at. So every day at practice I'm picking something to get better at.”

The Bengals recorded a 23-7 season and where undefeated at home. This was the first time ISU was undefeated at home since 1987 and the 23 wins tied for the third best mark in program history. The longest win streak of the season was nine, the longest since 1989.  Mendenhall said every single home game was memorable because of the teams winning streak.

“We knew with the team dynamic, we were going to be successful this year,” says Mendenhall

When Mendenhall looked back at the season, she wanted to thank two important people for their support.

“Number one the coaching staff, especially Chad,” Mendenhall said.  “I think he has built me into the player I am today. I appreciate him so much. Second my teammates who have always helped me to become better. They are the best teammates ever.”

Head coach Chad Teichert was named 2012 Big Sky Conference coach of the year. When he looks back to last season he is so happy for the team and for Lori.

“Lori was a leader of the team because of how hard she worked,” Teichert said.  “She is smart about volleyball.”

Teichert is proud of his team and is happy for Mendenhall's success.

“To only have this award twice, this time around it's really cool,” Teichert said. “I'm happy for Lori and I'm happy for the whole team because they had to play well too. “

Teichert hopes the winning season of the team will aid as motivation for the Bengals future.

“Hopefully its motivating to the kids,” said Teichert.  “Hopefully they want to be a part of a good team and be willing to put in the hard work to be good.”

In closing, Mendenhall gave advice to future Bengals and all players who are passionate about volleyball.

“Don't ever give up,” Mendenhall exclaims. “Always believe that you can do it and work hard every day.”
