What did you focus on in the off season to improve for this season?
I worked a lot on my ball handling and trying to get to the basket. My sophomore year I focused too much on shooting 3-pointers. That was what I came here to do but I feel like I can expand my game so I have been trying to mix it up a little more.
How many hours did you spend in the gym working on your game in the off season?
I had weights for an hour and a half. Between that, workouts and getting shots on my own I spent three to four hours a day.
How did the injury (fractured femur) you suffered before your junior year in high school help you get back on the court?
When I had my injury it was hard and there was a time I thought I was done. I wasn't willing to accept that. I developed a work ethic that helped me get back on the floor and it has helped me find success. It has continued. Whenever I step into work I know that it could be my last. If it were to end I don't want to say I wasn't going as hard as I could.
When you score 33 like you did at San Francisco is their gratification in proving people that you can play at this level?
Yes and no. It is good to finally start playing well but no because it is a team-game and without my teammates being behind me that would have never happened. That performance has a lot to do with our team.
What gets you excited about this season?
We are a lot closer as a unit. We have a lot more experience this year. We probably would have lost that game at USF last year but having a lot of guys who have been through those situations, we were able to grind it out.
What are you studying?
Exercise science. I want to get into physical therapy school or be an athletic trainer. They made an impact on my life so I want to give back.
Did your siblings play basketball?
My sister played basketball in high school and decided not to play in college. My brother played high school basketball. Besides that my family is a music family. I play the guitar. My dad taught me how to play the guitar when I broke my leg.
Growing up did you have those basketball games on the drive way with your siblings?
My brother and I used to go at all the time. My sister never played me and then I beat her one time. She called my foot out. She got the ball and beat me and we never played again. I am the youngest so we really don't play the games anymore.
What is your favorite basketball moment?
Stepping on the floor for the first time after my injury. I wasn't cleared to play but I had just gotten off my crutches and my doctor told me I could start shooting around. It was after practice. Picking up the ball and shooting again gave me that hope that it might not be over.
