Bengals Beat Dickinson State 97-54 on Monday

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season  with a convincing 97-54 exhibition win over Dickinson State on Monday night at Reed Gym.

Idaho State finished with four players in double figures, led by Andre Hatchett's 20 points on eight of 11 shooting. Chris Hansen scored 17 points, Tomas Sanchez 16 and Jeffrey Solarin had 14. Freshman Justin Smith scored nine points, had five rebounds and three steals in 28 minutes off the bench.

"Jeff Solarin and Justin Smith did a pretty good job," Idaho State coach Bill Evans said. "I think Andre, Chris and Tomas are going to score some baskets for us this year but we have to have some other guys and I think we showed that tonight."

Idaho State shot 66 percent from the field and had 17 assists to only seven turnovers. The Bengal defense forced 24 turnovers and held Dickinson State to 42 percent shooting. Dickinson State did out rebound the Bengals 30-29. Solarin and Justin Smith led ISU on the boards with five.

"I am happy," Evans said. "I think we did some good things defensively. Tomas did a good job with seven assists and only one turnover. I will take that any day."

The score was tied at 2-2 in the first minute then ISU took the lead and never looked back, holding Dickinson State scoreless for the next nine minutes to build a 20-2 lead.

The Bengals shot 69 percent in the first half and led 53-24 at halftime. Sanchez and Hatchett combined for 29 of the 53 first half points.

Idaho State's biggest lead was 47 points with just under three minutes to play in the game.

Idaho State officially opens the season on Saturday, Nov. 9 vs. Evergreen at 8 p.m. in Reed Gym.
