OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky conference announced Monday that five members of the ISU women's tennis team have earned all-academic honors. The all-academic team members include seniors
Katharina Marsela (management) and
Laura Porras (civil engineering), junior
Rachel Ryan (dietetics), sophomore
Zamira Vasquez (biology) and freshman
Marian Tangarife (civil engineering).
The women's tennis team has improved in the 2012 season both on and off the court as the five all-academic honorees this season are the most the team has seen in the last five seasons with three honorees in 2011, two in 2010, none in 2009 and two in 2008.
Porras and Vasquez earned the second all-academic achievement of their careers as both were named all-academic in 2011.
Marsela, Ryan and Tangarife earned their first all-academic recognitions this season.
Porras led ISU this season in singles play with a 7-8 record overall and went 4-2 in Big Sky play, earning second team all-conference honors, the first ISU women's player to do so since 2004.
Tangarife had a standout freshman season going 6-11 overall and 4-4 in conference action in singles play and was the second part of ISU's leading duo at the No. 2 doubles with a 7-10 overall record and 4-4 league record.
To be eligible for the honor a student-athlete must have met or exceeded the following requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions. 2) Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the most recently completed term. 3) Completed at least one academic term at his/her current Big Sky Institution.
