POCATELLO, Idaho – Freshman
Krzysztof Stempien has been named Bengal Athlete of the Week for his performances last week against Montana State and Montana.
Last week it was the freshmen who really stood out on the court and Stempien went 2-0 on the week in singles action.
Against Montana State, Stempien defeated Alberto Fuentes at the No. 3 position 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Stempien as well as fellow freshmen
Andres Coello and
Austin Miller helped decide the 4-3 match against the Bobcats. The ISU win marked just the second time in program history that the Bengals have defeated the Bobcats and broke an 11-match losing skid to MSU. It was also the first conference loss for MSU this season.
In ISU's 5-2 loss to Montana, Stempien and Coello were the only Bengals to record wins in the match. Stempien defeated Andrew Warren at the No. 3 position in a very close match. Stempien lost the first set 2-6 but rallied to win the second set 7-6 after winning the tie breaker 11-9. Stempien went on to win the super tiebreaker 15-13.
Following his performances against MSU and Montana, Stempien improved to 10-6 overall on the season in singles action.
This is Stempien's second Bengal Athlete of the Week award. He was also named Bengal Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24 after helping ISU defeat regional rival Utah State.
Stempien and the rest of the Bengals face Sacramento State Saturday, April 14 in Sacramento, Calif. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
