Ashleigh Vella has been named Big Sky Player of the Week for her performance Saturday against Eastern Washington. Vella recorded her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the contest.
This was Idaho State's second straight match-up against EWU. Against the Eagles, Vella averaged 19 points and 9.5 rebounds. In Saturday's contest, Vella also tallied six assists, one block and a steal in 39 minutes of play.
This is Vella's second career Big Sky POTW award and the second for the Idaho State women's basketball program this season. Junior guard
Kaela Oakes earned co-POTW honors on Jan. 9. Vella last earned POTW recognition on Dec. 13, 2010.
Vella was also named College Sports Madness Big Sky Basketball Player of the Week as well as Bengal Athlete of the Week for her performance against Eastern Washington. This is the third College Sports Madness POTW honor for the women's basketball program this year. This is the sixth Bengal Athlete of the Week award for women's basketball. It is Vella's second straight Bengal Athlete of the Week nod and third overall this season.
Vella and the Bengals host the 2012 Big Sky Tournament sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union this week. The tournament begins Thursday, March 8 with the quarterfinals and runs through Saturday, March 10. ISU has a bye and will play the lowest remaining seed to come out of Thursday's quarterfinals on Friday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
