Junior forward Ashleigh Vella has been named this week’s Bengal Athlete of the Week following her performance against Eastern Washington last Saturday.

POCATELLO, Idaho – Junior forward Ashleigh Vella has been named this week's Bengal Athlete of the Week following her performance against Eastern Washington last Saturday.
 
The Bengals got off to a slow start in the scoring department in the first half, garnering just a two-point lead at halftime. Vella was held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, recording just three rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal. However, the Melbourne, Australia came out of the locker room and went on a scoring streak, tallying 21 points in the second half including 11 straight points in a three-minute time period.
 
Vella finished the game with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.
 
Vella's performance helped ISU defeat Eastern Washington and clinch sole ownership of the Big Sky regular season title for the first time since 2006. ISU has earned the right to host the 2012 Big Sky Tournament sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union March 8-10.
 
This is Vella's second Bengal Athlete of the Week honor this season. She was previously selected for her performance at the Air Force Classic where she recorded a season-high 22 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double against Jackson State and was named Air Force Classic MVP.
 
Idaho State hosts its last home game of the regular season this Saturday, March 3 at Reed Gym. The Bengals take on Eastern Washington once again. The match-up will tipoff at 2:05 p.m. with senior recognition before the game.
