LAS VEGAS – The Idaho State women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2012 ITA Regional Wednesday night.
In doubles action, freshmen
Wiebke Boeckmann and Svenja Tegtmeir were defeated by Colorado's Ashley Tiefel and Mazy Watrous 8-4.
Sophomore Marian Tagarife and freshman
Laura Theus lost 8-2 to Montana's Hayley Driver and Sasha Carter.
In singles play, Tangarife fell to Air Force's Christina Molina 6-3, 6-1 while Boeckmann dropped a match to UNLV's Ella Bourchier 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman
Kasey Bacon, Theus and Tegtmeir also recorded losses in the first round. Bacon lost to Colorado State's Mollie Cooper 6-1, 6-3 and Theus fell to Nevada-Reno's Emma Verberne (9-16) 6-0, 6-1. Tegtmeir dropped her singles match to Utah's Tereza Berkova (7) 6-1, 6-3.
Play resumes Thursday morning, weather permitting, and runs through Sunday.
More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players are competing this week at UNLV as part of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 8-11, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
