Bengal Athlete of the Week Archive
OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference announced Monday that junior guard
Kaela Oakes has been named co-Big Sky Player of the Week with Portland State's Kate Lanz. Oakes has also been named Bengal Athlete of the Week for her performances against Montana and Montana State last week.
Against Montana State, Oakes led ISU with 18 points. Oakes knocked down four shots from beyond the arc and went 6-15 from the field. Oakes also posted two rebounds, four assists and three steals. Oakes led the Bengals in the first half with eight points, hitting a long three early in the half to break a 12-0 MSU run and then hit another to bring the score to 16-10. Oakes also hit a pair of pressure free throws late in the second half to help secure ISU's 59-58 victory.
Against Montana, Oakes showed her consistency as a player as her stats against the Griz were almost identical to her stats against the Bobcats. Oakes led the Bengals again with 18 points and also added two rebounds, four assists and one steal. In the first half alone, Oakes scored 12 points. Oakes made two three-point shots in the half and went a perfect four-of-four from the line.
Idaho State's win against the Griz broke a nine-game losing streak to Montana. The sweep over Montana and Montana State on the road is the first road sweep of the two schools for Idaho State since the 2000-01 season and just the second time in program history. The Bengals improved to 3-0 in conference play this week. The last time ISU began league play at 3-0 was during the 2000-01 season as well.
This is Oakes' second career Big Sky Player of the Week nod and her second Bengal Athlete of the Week award. This is Idaho State's first Big Sky Player of the Week award of the 2011-12 season and the fourth Bengal Athlete of the Week award this season.
Oakes and the rest of the Bengals return to Pocatello this week for a two-game home stand beginning with a contest against Sacramento State on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. followed by a match- up against Portland State on Monday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
