POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State men's tennis battled strong in today's match against Weber State but dropped the contest 5-2 to the Wildcats.
In doubles competition, senior
Dakota Pate and junior
Charles Norman were defeated at the No. 1 position in a very close 9-7 decision to a very good Weber State team that has defeated Utah and BYU at the No. 1 position 8-1 in both contests. Junior
Nate Gross and senior
Dan Buckingham lost to Caio Poitena and Ramstromer Pello 8-6 at the No. 2 position. Weber State also won the No. 3 position 8-5 against freshmen Krzyzstof Stempien and
Austin Miller.
“A lot of these matches could have gone either way today,” ISU Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “If things had gone a little differently, we could have very easily won 5-2 instead of the other way around. However, what happened today doesn't really matter for us because all that really matters is how we play in conference. In our mind, our record will still be at 0-0 until we play Portland State on Feb. 5.”
In singles play, Stempien won his second straight singles competition at the No. 4 position as he defeated Ramstromer Pello 6-4, 6-2. Freshman
Andres Coello also won his singles competition defeating Ben Rode in a close contest. Coello improved to 2-0 at the No. 6 position after defeating Rode 3-6, 6-3 and 12-10.
“I am pretty impressed with the freshman so far this season,” Goeltz said. “All three won their singles matches against Utah State last week and two won today against Weber State. What is even more impressive is how Andres and Austin kept the level of intensity up and finished their contests even after the match had been decided. Tennis is unique that way. I can't think of any other sport that requires you to continue to play after the game has already been decided.”
Idaho State men's tennis competes again Friday, Jan. 27 against Montana. The match begins at 3 p.m. and will be held at the Reed Gym courts.
