POCATELLO, Idaho- When
Mike Kramer was named football coach at Idaho State, he vowed to change the culture of the program academically. The evidence of that culture change can be seen by the team's fall semester grade point average of 3.04.
“This is an ongoing process that shadows the excellence the program is striving for,” Idaho State coach
Mike Kramer said. “We want academic achievement to be a characteristic of who we are. Ultimately academic performance is an ultimatum of our character. It is disappointing that we have been bedeviled by a severe disconnect in our senior class. We will continue to emphasize the positive and our new levels of attainment.”
As part of the excellent academic performance the fall semester APR score for the Bengal football team is 985. The team also had impressive 51 out of 81 student-athletes with a 3.00 GPA or better and two football student-athletes had a 4.0.
When Kramer was hired as coach he brought on former Bengal football player Quinton Freeman to be the team's academic coordinator.
“The man most responsible for this is Quinton Freeman,” Kramer said. “He deserves a lot of accolades for his direction, planning and foresight in keeping the coaches and players on task.”
On the success of the Bengal football team in the classroom, Freeman said, “We've come a long ways since November 28. The guys have responded well to the challenge we have put in front of them, academically and athletically. We will continue to do great things in the classroom. I want to thank our guys for responding. They are capable and its showing.”
