POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State put together 201 yards of total offense in nine drives during its second fall scrimmage on Tuesday afternoon at Holt Arena. The Bengals' three quarterbacks combined for 155 yards of offense led by
Kevin Yost with 71 yards on seven completions.
Brad Kragthorpe earned 51 yards on seven completions while
Justin Arias compiled 33 yards with five completions. Arias came out on fire opening his first drive behind the line of scrimmage with back-to-back 13 yard passes to
Luke Austin and
Andrew Zamora.
“The best part of the scrimmage is our quarterbacks continue to play without rancor. They play without being worried about the rush,” said Head Coach
Mike Kramer. “They stay calm and keep it in perspective. They don't try to whip the ball all over the place.”
ISU opened the scrimmage with Yost at the helm gaining 51 passing yards on a 3-of-4 drive including a 36 yard pass to junior wide receiver
Rodrick Rumble. Rumble led the Bengals with 42 receiving yards followed by
Derek Despot, a freshman tight end, who collected 26 yards: both completing two catches.
Idaho State earned 46 yards rushing led by sophomore
Jarrod Daniels with 24 yards gained on six carries.
Tavoy Moore had just four reps for 15 yards gained.
“We're trying to push the ball and make sure we are going to be able to run the ball effectively. We're not just going to throw it on every single down,” said Kramer.
Defensively, the Bengals showed their experience. Senior linebacker
Basim Hudeen collected a five yard interception on the first drive while senior linebacker
Jack Francis made a 12 yard fumble return during the third drive.
Austin Schnizler, a junior defensive lineman, recorded a four yard sack in the fourth drive taking down Arias. Redshirt freshman
David Forester got in on the action with a five yard sack in the sixth drive overtaking Kragthorpe.
“It's only scrimmage two and we're trying to make sure our offensive line understands where they have to go,” said Kramer. “The defense has had the most carry over. They've had the most guys who played in spring ball. Offensively we have three new wide receivers so it is a meld of new guys on that side of the ball so it's taking a little while for the offense.”
Idaho State is still exploring its talent in the receiving position running 13 players through the scrimmage giving repetitions to multiple players.
