POCATELLO, Idaho- One of the all-time greatest men's basketball players ever to play at Idaho State is coming back, this time as an assistant coach. Bengal men's basketball coach Joe O'Brien has announced that Jim Potter will join the staff as an assistant coach.
"Jim's return to Pocatello ... and now his addition to our basketball staff ... is exciting for Pocatello, Idaho State University, and the Bengal men's basketball program,” O'Brien said. “Jim was a three-time all-conference selection for the Bengals in the 90's and it's always a positive to have a successful former player on staff. His 15 years of professional basketball experience in Europe will give our staff a new twist when planning practices, our game prep, and scouting. As a position coach Jim will be working with our forwards and centers on a daily basis. We are elated to have Jim, Lori, and their beautiful daughters join our Bengal Basketball family."
Potter recently finished his professional basketball playing career where he played for two different teams in Belgium for the past 15 years. Since finishing his playing career, coaching is a career that the former Bengal star has wanted to pursue.
“This is my first year back in America and I've always wanted to coach,” Potter said. “It's an honor to be back and involved with Idaho State. It is going to be a great experience to be back here. I am thankful to coach O'Brien for giving me the chance.”
Potter earned Big Sky all-conference honors in his final three years at Idaho State while averaging just over 18 points a game. He is currently in the Top 10 of the Idaho State career record books for scoring (4th), rebounds (2nd), rebounding average (9th), steals (6th), blocks (6th), field goal attempts (4th), field goals made (4th), and free throws made and attempted (2nd).
