POCATELLO, Idaho – In Idaho State's final scrimmage of the spring season, the offense shined with
Kevin Yost and
Kyle Morris throwing a combined 53 passes completing 35 for 288 yards and three touchdowns.
Yost was 14 of 28 for 122 yards while Morris, a sophomore, went 21 of 25 for 166 yards passing.
“Our quarterbacks played just simply outstanding. There was awhile there that I didn't think Kevin (Yost) was going to throw an incompletion,” said Idaho State Head Coach
Mike Kramer.
The Bengal offense opened the scrimmage with Yost, a junior transfer, throwing 6 of 7 ending with a four yard passing touchdown by
Daniel McSurdy. He was caught all three of his passes in the opening drive for a total of 21 yards. He received 8 of 9 for 67 yards for the day.
Junior tight end
Josh Hill was perfect on the afternoon catching all 12 passes for a total of 96 yards to lead the offense. He helped the Bengals achieve four first downs and earned a five yard touchdown to end the scrimmage.
Rodrick Rumble, a junior wide receiver, led the Bengals in first downs with five. He was 9 of 14 receiving for 84 yards. Rumble had a 25 yard touchdown after going 3 for 3 on the drive. He would have had two touchdowns but his second was pulled back due to a false start by the offense.
“Roddrick Rumble had a nice day. Starting to emerge as a decent receiver, he has a long way to go. He makes too many critical errors to be a primetime player for us yet but he's starting to show that he can play,” said Kramer. “He's beating the coverage, doing well. He's doing what he's capable of doing.”
On defense, sophomore
Tanner Davis led the Bengals in tackles with 12. Davis had 10 solo tackles on the day.
“Tanner played excellent at safety and really directed the defense well,” said Kramer.
Redshirt freshman Cody McCoy of Jerome, Idaho followed suit collecting nine total tackles with eight solo efforts.
Basim Hudeen,
Keelan McCaffery and
Jon Davidson each recorded five tackles.
“The defense rallied and picked up their play. They played pretty darn well. Plus, we played better longer today,” said Kramer.
“We need to continue to grow and mature and understand the pace we want to play,” said Kramer of what the Bengals learned from the scrimmage.
The Bengals continue spring practice through April 29 when ISU plays the Dave Kragthorpe Spring Game in Holt Arena. The game starts at 5 p.m. and is open to the public.
