Bengals Complete First Spring Scrimmage

The Idaho State quarterbacks threw 58 passes.

Kevin Yost threw 35 passes in the first spring scrimmage.
POCATELLO, Idaho- In the first scrimmage of spring practice, the Idaho State offense showed they are going to be a team that loves to throw the ball as Kevin Yost and Kyle Morris combined to throw 58 passes, completing 37 for 258 yards and two touchdowns.

“There is a seven letter word that defines it and that is perfect,” Idaho State coach Mike Kramer said. “That is what we want, a hint of a running game but mostly throwing the ball so everyone can see what we are doing.”

The Bengal offense carried the ball only four times for 16 yards as Jahmel Rover and Felipe Valdez each had two carries.

Yost was 22-for-35 for 170 yards and one touchdown while Morris was 15-for-23 for 88 yards and one touchdown and one interception.

“We finally got a chance to see what some guys are capable of,” Kramer said. “I saw a lot of really nice things. While Kevin didn't throw the ball down the field as well as he has in practice I thought he dumped the ball off nicely.”

Josh Hill caught a high 10 passes for 59 yards while Daniel McSurdy caught seven passes for 44 yards and one touchdown and Jarrod Daniels had five receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Benavides had five receptions for 74 yards but did leave the game with a lower left leg injury.

On the defensive side of the ball, Phil Pleasant and JT Albers each had seven tackles while Greg Melendez and Kelvin Miller had five. Pleasant picked off Morris in the scrimmage while Tanner Davis and Melendez each had two pass deflections.

“Josh, Tanner Davis and Greg Melendez played well this afternoon,” Kramer said. “Overall I like what I saw and it was a good starting point for practice seven.”

The Bengals continue spring practice through April 29 where the Dave Kragthorpe Spring Game will be held at 5 p.m.

On April 22, the football team will hold the first annual Bengal Day at Holt Arena where the entire team and coaching staff will be available to sign autographs and meet the ISU fans.
