Ashleigh Vella has been selected as the Bengal Athlete of the Week for games played the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4. Vella lead the Bengals against Jackson State with her first double-double of the season with 22 points and a career-high 15 points. Vella was also a main contributor in ISU's victory over Big East opponent South Florida. Vella's performances in both games earned her Air Force Classic MVP honors over the weekend.
Against Jackson State, Vella's 22 points and 15 rebounds helped the Bengals secure a 47-36 victory over the Tigers. Vella also recorded three assists and one block in the contest.
Vella was also one of three Bengals to score in double digits against South Florida. Vella posted 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and dished off two assists during the match-up. In the game, ISU stunned South Florida, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. ISU fired off five quick three-pointers in the beginning of the half, one coming from Vella at the 18:13 mark. ISU shot an outstanding 43.4 percent from the floor to overcome USF 76-63.
Vella is currently ranked ninth in the conference in both free throw percentage (.786) and three-point field goal percentage (.381). She is also ranked in a tie for ninth in defensive rebounds (4.5). She is ranked in a tie for 11
th in rebounds (6.3) and 14
th in scoring (11.4).
This is Vella's first Bengal Athlete of the Week award and is the third recognition for women's basketball for the 2011-12 season as junior forward
