POCATELLO, Idaho – Junior guard
Kaela Oakes has been selected as the Bengal Athlete of the Week for games played the week of Dec. 5-Dec. 11. Oakes drove to the hoop for a layup with nine seconds remaining clutch a victory for Idaho State against Utah State Saturday afternoon. The Bengals defeated USU 67-65.
Against the Aggies, Oakes scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds. She also tallied five assists and one steal in 36 minutes of play. The game-winning layup was just one of three critical shots made by Oakes during the contest as she tied the score for the first time in the first half at 12:56 with a layup and then again drove to the hoop again on the next possession to give Idaho State its first lead of the contest.
Oakes also led the Bengals in the 56-31 loss to Utah Tuesday night. Oakes posted nine points as well as five rebounds and two steals.
Oakes leads Idaho State in steals on the season, averaging 1.1 per game. She is also ranked ninth in the conference in free throw percentage (.744) and 14
th in scoring, averaging 11.2 points per game.
This is Oakes' first Bengal Athlete of the Week award and the fourth recognition for women's basketball for the 2011-12 season. Women's basketball has had a recipient chosen for the third straight week, the longest streak of any sport this year.
Oakes and the rest of the Bengals take the week of in preparation for two games next week. The first will be Monday, Dec. 19 against Oklahoma Panhandle State followed by South Dakota on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Both games will be played in Holt Arena and will begin at 7 p.m.
