Idaho State University - NCAA Athletics Certification Athletics certification was approved for Division I institutions at the 1993 NCAA Convention as a key part of the NCAA's reform agenda. Certification was originally introduced in 1989 and tested in a two-year pilot program. Participants generally agreed that the pilot program was valuable but could be improved by limiting the scope of the self-study. After a special committee reworked the idea over the next year, the NCAA Presidents commission, the NCAA Council and the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics supported a revised version of the program. The third cycle of the athletics certification program begins fall 2008. Idaho State University is one of the first universities to start the third cycle of certification, having started in September of 2008. The process will go throughout 2009 as well. On this site will be many of the pertinent public documents relating to Idaho State's NCAA certification process. This page will be updated periodically thoughout the process.
Pocatello, ID (April 20, 2009) --- As a part of Idaho State University's year-long process to fulfill NCAA Certification process, the general public and fans are now invited to review drafts of different NCAA Certification documents. The documents have been put together after a campus-wide self-study. Members of the public are invited to submit any comments on the drafts to the committee for review. The documents will include drafts regarding academic integrity, governance and commitment to rules compliance, commitment to gender equity, diversity, and student-athlete well being, with each area measured against a set of operating principles established by the NCAA. The documents are available in downloadable PDF format for use of viewing or printing. Comments can either be emailed to NCAA Certification or mailed to: Idaho State University
All review comments should be emailed by April 28, and all comments that are sent via the post office should be postmarked no later then April 24. Academic accreditation is common in colleges and universities, but the NCAA program focuses just on certifying athletics programs, and based on numerous criteria. The certification program is designed to ensure integrity in the university's athletics operations. The evaluation process is also designed to serve as how the athletic department integrates with the university mission. This is Idaho State's third NCAA certification, as the university was one of the first to ever undergo the process back in 1995, and then again in 2000. The NCAA recertifies schools every 10 years. After the completed self-study report is submitted on May 1, a team of NCAA reviewers from other colleges, universities, or conference offices will then conduct a three-day on-campus evaluation sometime in October.
